A rapid ethanolysis procedure for preparing jojoba wax for gas liquid chromatographic analysis is described. The wax esters are hydrolyzed by refluxing 4 drops of jojoba wax in 5% HCl in anhydrous ethanol in a test tube. The resulting fatty acid ethyl esters and fatty alcohols are separated and quantitated by a single gas liquid chromatographic run. Analysis of duplicate samples by this procedure gives essentially the same results as a procedure which requires 10 times more sample and reagents and considerably more time.  相似文献

Background

Bicycling related head injuries (HIs) can be severe. Helmet use reduces head injury risk; however, there are few controlled studies of the effect of helmet legislation. We conducted this study to investigate changes in HIs after bicycle helmet legislation targeting those <18 in Alberta, Canada in 2002.

Methods

Bicyclist and pedestrian (control) HI rates and HIs as a proportion of all injuries were compared for the three years (1999–2001) before and four years (2003–2006) after bicycle helmet legislation in three age groups (children: <13, adolescents: 13–17, and adults: 18+).

Results

There were 41,270 ED visits and 2782 hospitalizations for bicyclists and 9836 ED visits and 2029 hospitalizations for pedestrians (excluding the legislation year 2002). The rate of ED HIs declined for child bicyclists and child pedestrians, while the rate of non-HIs declined in adult bicyclists and child pedestrians. The rate of hospitalized HIs declined in child bicyclists and all ages of pedestrians while non-HI rates declined for child and adult pedestrians. Non-HI rates for adolescent and adult bicyclists increased. After adjusting for sex and location, the proportion of ED bicycle HIs declined by 9% (APR = 0.91; 95% CI: 0.86, 0.95) in children, was unchanged among adolescents and increased in adults (APR = 1.08; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.15). The proportion of bicycle HI related hospitalizations decreased by 30% (APR = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.55, 0.90) in children, 36% (APR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.49, 0.84) in adolescents and 24% (APR = 0.76; 95% CI: 0.63, 0.91) in adults. There were no observed changes in the proportion of pedestrian HIs resulting in ED visits or hospitalizations.

Interpretation

Our data indicate significant declines in the proportion of child bicyclist ED HIs and child, adolescent and adult bicyclist HI hospitalizations. This is in contrast to no significant trends in the proportion of ED or hospitalized HIs among pedestrians and the unexpected increases in the proportion of ED HIs for adult bicyclists. Comparing bicyclist and pedestrian trends in the proportion of child and adolescent HIs suggests a bicycle helmet legislation effect.  相似文献

The use of a wide variety of antimicrobials in human and veterinary medicine, including aquaculture, has led to the emergence of antibiotic resistant pathogens. In the present study, bacteria from water, sediments, and fish were collected from fish farms in Pakistan and Tanzania with no recorded history of antibiotic use. The isolates were screened for the presence of resistance genes against various antimicrobials used in aquaculture and animal husbandry. Resistant isolates selected by disk diffusion and genotyped by Southern hybridization were further screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and amplicon sequencing. The prominent resistance genes identified encoded tetracycline [tetA(A) and tetA(G)], trimethoprim [dfrA1, dfrA5, dfrA7, dfrA12, and dfrA15], amoxicillin [bla(TEM)], streptomycin [strA-strB], chloramphenicol [cat-1], and erythromycin resistance [mefA]. The int1 gene was found in more than 30% of the bacterial isolates in association with gene cassettes. MAR indices ranged from 0.2 to 1. The bla(NDM-1) gene was not identified in ertapenem resistant isolates. It is hypothesized that integrated fish farming practices utilizing domestic farm and poultry waste along with antibiotic residues from animal husbandry may have contributed to a pool of resistance genes in the aquaculture systems studied.  相似文献

SrCe0.9Eu0.1O3−δ thin-film (∼30 μm) tubular hydrogen separation membranes were developed in order to obtain high hydrogen fluxes. Fifteen centimeters long, one end closed, NiO–SrCeO3 tubular supports were fabricated by tape casting, followed by rolling the green tape on a circular rod. SrCe0.9Eu0.1O3−δ powders were prepared by the citrate process and coated on partially sintered NiO–SrCeO3 tubular supports. Leakage-free hydrogen membrane cells were obtained by adjusting the presintering and final sintering temperatures to reduce the difference of linear shrinkage rates between SrCe0.9Eu0.1O3−δ thin films and NiO–SrCeO3 supports. A hydrogen flux of 2.2 cm3/min was obtained for the SrCe0.9Eu0.1O3−δ on Ni–SrCeO3 tubular hydrogen separation membranes at 900°C using 25% H2 balanced with Ar and 3% H2O as the feed gas and He as the sweep gas. Thus, a 40% single pass yield of pure H2 was achieved with this membrane.  相似文献

Numerical differentiation formulas that yield consistent least squares parameter estimates from sampled observations of linear, time invariant higher order systems have been introduced previously by Duncan et al. (1994). The formulas given by Duncan et al. have the same limiting system of equations as in the continuous time case. The formula presented in this note can be characterized as preserving asymptotically a partial integration rule. It leads to limiting equations for the parameter estimates that are different from the continuous case, but they again imply consistency. The numerical differentiation formulas given here can be used for an arbitrary linear system, which is not the case in the previous paper by Duncan et al  相似文献

A study of the free surface flow on an ogee-crested fish bypass is presented. The commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Fluent 6.1 was used to perform the simulations. Structured/unstructured hybrid grids were used to accommodate the complex geometry that included gate slots, flow control gates, and an aeration slot. The volume of fluid (VOF) approach was used to model the water/air interface. The fish bypass exhibits complex free surface features including free nappes and air entrainment from the air slots. Free surface elevations on both sides of the nappe, pressure along the ogee surface, and discharge rating curves were compared against 1:24 experimental data from the laboratory model for different headwater elevations and gate settings. Limited comparison against measured velocities was also performed. Once deemed reliable through validation against experimental data, the computational model was used to analyze the flow field, supplementing the areas of limited experimental data. Though the paper presents the final fish bypass design, CFD was used to guide the design process and provide insight for several variations in the geometry.  相似文献

We prove that any simplification order over arbitrary terms is an extension of an order by weight, by considering a related monadic term algebra called the spine. We show that any total ground-stable simplification order on the spine lifts to an order on the full term algebra. Conversely, under certain restrictions, a simplification ordering on the term algebra defines a weight function on the spine, which in turn can be lifted to a weight order on the original ground terms which contains the original order. We investigate the Knuth–Bendix and polynomial orders in this light. We provide a general framework for ordering terms by counting embedded patterns, which gives rise to many new orderings.
